The foundation plays an important role in the Central Florida community by educating people about brain injuries and neurological diseases. Then we give hope for a better future through scholarships for graduating high school seniors who are pursuing a career in the medical field. Who knows if one of these scholarship recipients will discover the cure for dementia or Parkinson’s, for example? I had known Sia for years and was shocked when she was suddenly taken from us. I serve on the board for her, for my mom who suffers from Lewy Bodies Dementia, for my sister in-law who is recovering from a brain aneurysm and for all the others who have been impacted by a brain condition.

I’d like to share three reasons why Sia Brain Awareness Foundation is important to me. First, Sia and I went to Elementary School (Deltona Lakes) and Junior High (Galaxy Middle) together. Mom Yorker always said that Sia and I would get married one day. (I guess God had other plans). I had the opportunity to experience my first ever missions trip with Sia during the summer of 2007 with the Deltona, YMCA.

Public Relations Director
I can still remember that call I received from Mrs. Yorker when she asked me if I would like to be a part of Sia Yorker Brain Awareness Foundation “SYBAF”. I felt such joy and honor. Sia and I became best friends at the age of 5, we grew together throughout years of daycare, gymnastics, and schooling. She always had this charisma, humor, & outgoing personality that I always admired.

Deborah Settles

Advisory Board Member, The Sia Foundation
The Sia Brain Awareness Foundation is important to me because the Foundation brings not only awareness of symptoms of an acute brain hemorrhage, but the foundation’s goal is to educate on all adverse brain conditions. Such a deed allows others experiencing a brain condition; or a family member to know that they are not alone in their journey.

Lesly

Advisory Board Member, The Sia Foundation
Valerie has been employed in the Human Resources (HR) Department with United Parcel Service (UPS) as a Human Resource Area Representative for over 26 years. She joined the Sia Yorker Foundation because of her desire to be involved with giving back to the community and helping to change the lives of youths. This foundation is special to her because Sia was very special to Valerie and her family. Sia’s journey home reminded Valerie of her mother’s journey home and the foundation that she and her siblings wanted to create upon her passing. The foundation and scholarship fund that they wanted to create in memory of their mother never came to pass. Being a part of the Sia Yorker Foundation allows Valerie the opportunity to see a wonderful young lady touch the lives of others through the life she lived.
